A Cross Hills GP has commented in a national newspaper following the news that the number of vacant GP posts has virtually doubled to 12% in just 2 years
The Daily Mail article claims that many more doctors are either taking early retirement or moving overseas
It’s a well-known fact that the numbers of students studying to be doctors has dropped over the last six years – others are opting for hospital work rather than general practice
But Dr Catherine Smith, registered manager of the Cross Hills Group Practice told the paper she wasn’t surprised at the rise in vacancies
She said the practice has recruited ANPs (advanced nurse practitioners) and pharmacists to help as there are no GPs.
The Mail claims that government has not given surgeries enough funding to cope with the soaring patient demand and has created more paperwork.
