Retired Headmaster From Silsden Has Been Awarded The British Empire Award For His Work In The Community

A retired headmaster from Silsden is one of several local people to feature in the Queen’s New Years Honours list

Mike Carey has been awarded the British Empire Medal for his work in the local community where’s he’s volunteered with numerous groups

For the last fifteen years Mike has driven a minibus, taking people with learning disabilities on their annual outing – he’s also involved in several other groups dedicated to similarly afflicted people

The 71 year old also been closely connected to a number of local church groups and primary schools, and has taken part in several London marathons and 25 half-marathons, raising money for several charities.

Former policeman David Sowden, from Ilkley, also gets the MBE, for services to young children

Mr Sowden has maintained links with scout groups since he was a member as a youngster, and is currently leader of the 3rd Bingley Sea Scouts at the age of 76
